The meeting was called to order by President McKinney. The members introduced themselves to the group. New members/guests were welcomed.
The minutes of the March 16th meeting were presented and approved.
Treasurer's Report:
President McKinney made available in paper format (attached to the original) the Treasurer's Report due to Linda Roser's absence.
The Executive Board members have been contacting previous members about renewing their memberships. President McKinney mentioned that membership seemed to be at or near capacity, but that if anyone knew of someone who would be interested in joining KCALL, to please invite them.
Technology/Union List:
President McKinney made this report due to Barbara Fullerton's absence. She stated that the Executive Board was notified that our Letter of Intent to submit the grant application for the Library Cooperation Competitive Grant was rejected by the State Library of Missouri. Reasons cited were that our records were not in MARC format and that they considered the project to be "retrospective conversion."
Joan Thomas spoke about the placement of our Union List on library.com. They would take care of eveything including changing the list into MARC format. It would cost $365 a year for maintenance which would include 4 updates a year. However, we would not own the data nor would we be able to update the list ourselves. Also, if we would want the list password protected, there would be an additional cost of $100. The list would need to be sent in Excel. Joan personally thought that the cost was a bit high and outweighed the benefits. Janet mentioned that the Executive Board concurred. Janet discussed that Susan Duede had tried to contact James Huseman of Linda Hall Library concerning how to go about this project ourselves.
New Business:
At the last Executive Board meeting, Linda Roser suggested that the KCALL Membership Directory be posted on kcall.org if voted on and approved by the members. The policy would be that work information would be the only information included.
There was a motion and a second to discuss this proposal. There was a concern that vendors and/or publishers might use the directory information in a possibly inappropriate manner. This concern could be alleviated by password protection. It was suggested that we start out with password protection; if it were deemed unnecessary it could be removed later. It was mentioned that other law library associations had their directories password protected.
The membership passed the motion.
Tranne Pearce reported that she had met with the 27 librarians of the Missouri Department of Corrections Library Staff. Some of them have previously worked as school librarians. This group will meet again on November 1st. She informed us that the Legal Section (25 members) of the Missouri Library Association will meet at the Missouri U.S. Courts facilities on October 3rd in the afternoon prior to the general meeting at the Elms in Excelsior Springs. Other legal organizations with whom we might participate include MALL, SWALL and AALL.
President McKinney concluded by thanking Lathrop & Gage for hosting the meeting at the last minute and supplying us with the wonderful desserts. She adjourned the meeting; there followed a presentation given by Vivian Jennings of Rainy Day Books.
